ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SANITATION UNIT
The Municipal Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit is a regulatory and essential service provider that ensure strategic administration and execution of policies and programmes relating to Environmental Sanitation and Public Health.
The department’s focal aim and duties are to ensure clean, safe and healthy environment through Hygiene Education and waste management activities. The department also collaborates with NGOs and other faith – based Organizations to organize clean up exercises and other hygiene – based programmes geared towards making LeKMA a waste intelligent Municipality.
SERVICES
The Municipal Environmental Health Unit provides services that promote and protect public health and safety through collaborative innovation and strategic standard enforcement via assessment of all types of premises to ensure satisfactory, hygienic building and environment including removal and safe disposal of reasonably preventable conditions favorable for mosquito and general pest breeding i.e,
- Domiciliary premises,
- Health care facilities,
- Industries (small, medium and large scale)
- Hospitality industries and recreation facilities,
- Schools,
- Shops and markets
- Sanitary sites and infrastructure
Food hygiene and Safety services
- Medical screening for food handlers and certification
- Food handlers or food vendors medical is done solely at the Environmental Unit with qualified laboratory technicians assigned to it.
Note: Only medically fit clients will be issued with the food handler’s card after screening.

- Application letter addressed to the Municipal Environmental Officer (MEHO)
- Disinfection & Disinfestation (fumigation)
- Issuance of disinfection and disinfestation certificate
- Control of stray animals
Destruction Of Unwholesome Items
Application letter addressed to the Municipal Environmental Health Officer specifying the item to be destroyed and quantity.
Environmental Monitoring Control
- Noise nuisance
- Smoke nuisance
- Dust nuisance
Complaint of noise nuisance should be made at the Municipal Environmental Health Officer.
A letter indicating the area, the address and signature of the affected persons should be added as a supporting document.
Grave Space Acquisition
All burials in LeKMA must first pass through this department, after obtaining burial permit from Births and Deaths Department. Whether at a public, private or a family cemetery.
To obtain a grave space you will need the medical cause of death from an approved health institution.
Cremation Of Corpse
One would need;
- Application letter addressed to the Director
- Cause of death
- Embalmment Certificate (specifying the chemical used)
- Proof of membership of cremation society (if a Ghanaian)
- Photocopy of passport (if a foreign national)
- Payment is made through the approved payment systems in accordance with the gazetted fee.
Note: this is done in a day
Exportation Of Human Ash, Human Body (Whole Or Parts)
One would need;
- Application letter addressed to the Municipal Environmental Health Officer Cause of death (communicable diseases will not be exported)
- Embalmment Certificate (specifying the chemical used)
- Proof of membership of cremation society (if a Ghanaian)
- Photocopy of passport
- Payment is made through the approved payment systems in accordance with the gazetted fee.

Exhumation
One would need;
- Application letter addressed to the Municipal Environmental Health Officer
- Court order (From a Higher Court)
- Copy of burial permit
- Death certificate
- Cause of death
- Identification of the disease person
- Identification of grave or burial place
- Payment is made through the approved payment systems in accordance with the gazetted fee.
Pauper Burial / Unclaimed Bodies
One would need;
- Police (Coroner’s certificate from court)
- Letter from Police or verbal complain to the Director
Note: All pauper cases should be reported to the police.

Waste Management Services
Services of the waste management department ranges from waste collection and disposal, public cleansing to advisory services.
Services are either rendered directly or outsourced to private service providers through franchise agreement, or direct contract where the LeKMA pay for the service rendered.
Statutory services provided by the department include waste collection from public places such as markets, lorry stations and public open spaces.

Solid Waste Collection Services
Subscription to solid waste services is mandatory to all owners and occupiers of all types of premises (domestic, industrial, institutions etc).
Prospective service beneficiaries are required to register with only LeKMA accredited service providers in their respective communities for solid waste services.
It is illegal to subscribe to services of unaccredited service providers.
Special Waste Collection Services
- Evacuation of bulk waste from private property
- Evacuation of construction waste and debris
- Cleaning of constructing site and evacuation of waste after completion of project
- Evacuation of E-Waste
- Cleaning and Evacuation of toxic waste
Liquid Waste Management Services
- Desludging of septic tanks
- Desilting of septic tanks
- Construction of household toilets
- Implementation of GAMA-WSP household toilets project
- Design and construction of toilet facilities
- Site inspection for sanitary facilities
Cleansing Services
- Cleaning of streets, pavements and Kerbs
- Cleaning of public open spaces
- Cleaning of public places such as markets and lorry parks
- Cleaning of drains
These services are available to private property owner or establishments on demand
Events Waste Management
The WMD provide complete event waste management solutions for events like festivals, religious conventions, exhibitions and other gatherings where large volumes of waste of all types is generated.
Services include:
- sweeping of venue,
- cleaning of venue,
- evacuation of waste etc.
Advisory Services
- Development of waste management plans for real estate developers, commercial properties and industrial establishments
- Preparation of RFPs for procurement of waste management services by private entities
- Evaluation of proposals for waste management services
