AGRIC DEPARTMENT TRAINS FARMERS ON BIOSECURITY

The Department of Agriculture has trained farmers on BIOSECURITY which aims at protecting both human and animal life from the spread of diseases, as well as increasing yields.
The participants were taken through topics including :
* Biosecurity Meaning
* Benefits of Biosecurity
* Types of Biosecurity
* Pathogen Transmission
* How to achieve a Biosecurity Program
* Challenges of Biosecurity
Mr D.N.Y Tawiah-Yingar (Veterinary Services, Accra), the facilitator of the training, discouraged farmers, especially poultry farmers from performing postmortem activities themselves on their farms as it exposes the disease into the environment. Instead, he advised farmers to seek the services of experts.
He also pointed out that farmers consider their health and safety first as well as their farmhands which is paramount.
The Municipal Director of Agric, Mrs Rachel Cann(PhD) took the opportunity to encourage the farmers to form cooperatives and take full advantage of the Feed Ghana Programme (FGP) – a flagship initiative of the broader Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA) by the government which aims at modernizing agriculture, creating jobs, reducing food inflation and fostering agro-industrial development. She stressed that the initiative is community based and commodity based thus, the need to form cooperatives.
